  19. input shaft by
  20. slipping the clutch
  21. disk between the
  22. pressure plate and
  23. the flywheel. 
  24. Torque is increased
  25. gradually so that
  26. the car can be
  27. started from a
  28. complete stop.

  30. Some manual
  31. transmissions have
  32. an "overdrive", or
  33. a high-speed
  34. attachment for
  35. highway travel. 
  36. Overdrive typically
  37. reduces engine
  38. speed to improve
  39. fuel economy, while
  40. maintaining the
  41. same road speed.
